![]() Lou Holtz, Dennis Erickson, Bobby Bowden, and John Cooper were all there. There were some pretty good head coaches, too. Although, you know, I may have had an over-inflated ego at the time. I was going to get there and no doubt about it, no question at all that I was going to start and be the man. I visited all those schools and at every school (Miami, Florida State, Ohio State, Notre Dame) the head coaches at the time told me to my face - face to face, eye to eye - that I was going to start. I got down to my visits: I visited Florida State, unofficially, visited Miami, officially, visited Ohio State, officially, visited Notre Dame, officially, and then visited Florida, officially. Why did I pick the University of Florida? Why didn’t I pick Miami or Florida State? If you’re from Florida, you would have been well off at either school. The funny story there is I had a conversation with a close friend of mine this past weekend. Take a look at what he had to say about his time at Florida, his NFL opportunity, as well as his cornhole skills. Gators Wire had a chance to talk with Kearse courtesy of the Johnsonville Charity Cornhole Challenge, in which he competed with fellow former Gator Titus O’Neil ahead of the South Carolina game in Week 7. He lasted 11 seasons in the pro ranks, also spending time with the Philadelphia Eagles. ![]() His efforts convinced the Tennessee Titans to select him with the 16th overall pick of the 1999 NFL draft. ![]() His collegiate career reached a pinnacle in his junior season, leading the team with 7.5 sacks while also notching a career-high 54 tackles en route to an SEC Defensive Player of the Year Award. The Gators have a litany of former players who stood out both at the amateur and professional levels, with two achieving immortality in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Īmong the many who have proudly worn the Orange and Blue in Gainesville is former linebacker and defensive end Jevon Kearse, who played in the Swamp from 1995 to 1998. The University of Florida has produced countless numbers of superlative athletes over the years, particularly the storied football program.
